The governor and the legislative leaders continue to meet, but apparently haven't even reached the point of discussing a final budget number.

This meeting took place away from cameras at the Thompson Center at Chicago. Afterwards, Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) and House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) say the focus at the moment is seeing what parts of Gov. Bruce Rauner's so-called "turnaround agenda" that Democrats are willing to consider, not how much revenue the state will have for a budget for the remaining months of the fiscal year.

"That's correct," Radogno said. "I mean, we haven't really gotten into the nitty gritty of the budget."

"I think our staffs will continue to meet, and they're going to meet more over the next few weeks," Durkin added. "We're going to meet again, hopefully next week."

House Speaker Michael Madigan (D-Chicago) confirmed that both term limits and redistricting reform were discussed in the meeting, though he remains opposed to both. Still, he thinks the discussions are productive.

"This was a good meeting," Madigan said. "Was there progress or no progress? There was some progress. We all know from experience that when you get into a budget impasse of this nature that it's a bunch of small steps. There's not going to be any leaps to success."

Madigan remains critical of parts of Rauner's agenda besides government reforms, including changing prevailing wage and workers' compensation laws. Madigan considers those proposals a strategy to "use the government to bring down wages and the standard living."

There's no set date for when the leaders and Rauner will meet again next week.
