For years, bullies have used the school hallways and playgrounds to make other kids feel fear, guilt, or shame. But according to wrex.com, using forms of social media to bully other kids is on the rise in Rockford. By using social media, kids are no longer able to shut down the bullying. When the bell rang at 3 p.m., the bullies were silenced until the next school day. With social media, there is no escape. Kids are getting bullied through email, text, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

While the Rockford Public Schools have seen a decrease in overall bullying since 2014, there has been a rise in cyber bullying.

So what can you do to help prevent your children from engaging in 'cyber bullying'? Start talking to them about it at a young age. Make them aware of it and let them know it is not okay. Train your children how to use social media in a positive and effective manner. Also talk to them about being an advocate against bullying. Teach them to stand up for themselves, and their peers. Together we can help make the next generation smarter, kinder, and more empathetic. Always lead with tenderness and love.
