With Earth Day 2016 just a few days away, there's a new report out on the level of "green" in each state in the union. While Illinois is not #1, at least we're not at the bottom.

WalletHub.com took a look at all 50 states to gauge the level of environmental quality and the eco-friendliness of state policy. There are other criteria to be considered, like climate change contributions, and eco-friendly "behaviors," but rather than bog ourselves down in the details, here's a look at the top ten "greenest" states (higher numbers=good, lower numbers=needs improvement, with 100 being a perfect score):

  1. Vermont (78.67)
  2. Washington (74.88)
  3. Massachusetts (73.28)
  4. Oregon (72.77)
  5. Minnesota (70.93)
  6. Maine (70.40)
  7. Connecticut (70.02)
  8. New York (69.34)
  9. New Hampshire (68.67)
  10. New Jersey (68.42)

Illinois comes in at the #20 spot, with a score of 62.55. Wisconsin fares better at the #15 spot, and a score of 64.36. Iowa holds the #40 spot, and a score of 50.29. Indiana is at #38, and earns a score of 51.65. Missouri comes in at #30, scoring a 57.95.
