Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois is operating its GoodTAXES volunteer income tax assistance sites for the sixth year in a row with great success in local communities in its first six weeks. Since opening the sites on Friday, January 30, 2015, Goodwill’s 64 certified volunteers have completed over 1,215 returns and returned over $1.6 million to communities.  Community members using the site have raved about the quick, friendly, and efficient service.

“One of Goodwill’s ultimate goals is to help community members obtain the maximum refund that they are entitled to and possibly save hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees with this free and easy service”, states Courtney Geiger, Director of Mission Services at Goodwill.  “Our volunteers and community partners make this program a success and we can’t thank them enough.”

Goodwill is hosting sites this year at its Mission Services Center and East High School in Rockford, Illinois and its Goodwill store in DeKalb, Illinois.  These regions, hit especially hard by unemployment and the economy, need the sites and Goodwill wants to ensure strong sites that would help a large number of individuals in these communities. Goodwill also has a mobile GoodTAXES site that will travel to several locations throughout Goodwill’s service area.

All of the GoodTAXES sites offer free assistance to families with income less than $50,000 and individuals with income less than $25,000.  Our volunteers also assist community members in claiming any special credits and deductions for which they may be eligible.  To date, the program has helped return over $750,000 in Earned Income Credits (EIC) to these individuals.
