I sometimes feel badly for those who are too young to have experienced the fun of a drive-in movie. At one time, Rockford had several drive-in movie theaters to choose from, but those days are long gone. Now, the closest drive-in that I could find is 39 miles away in McHenry. Don't despair, though. There's a great alternative right here in town.

The alternative to a long drive, or even a trip down memory lane, is to head down to Davis Park tonight, and/or the first Friday night of July and August for Friday Night Flix.

Tonight, things kick off with the Davis Park gates opening at 7pm, and then tonight's movie, Disney/Pixar's "Inside Out," starting at around 8:30pm. Attendees will get a ticket for a free bag of popcorn, and you should bring blankets and lawn chairs. Also, you may bring in your own food (coolers will be checked), but no alcohol, please. Dogs (unless they're therapy dogs) are not allowed.

This summer's lineup of movies for Friday Night Flix is:

June 3rd: Inside Out

July 1st: Minions

August 5: The Good Dinosaur

Our kids may never get to enjoy the drive-in movie experience (like sneaking your friends in via the trunk of your car), but they can experience the joy of an outdoor movie at Davis Park three times this summer.

And, since our sister station, 97 ZOK, is a long-time sponsor of the event, you can count on some fun with the crowd:
