Dogs may love them, but I swore off buying rawhide bones for my dogs years ago for purely selfish reasons. First off, I cannot handle the gas that takes over my home a few hours after my dogs chew a rawhide. Secondly, they make a gooey nasty mess. Thirdly, I despise cleaning up dog vomit and have had to that on several occasions thanks to a rawhide.

Turns out there is a more serious reason we should leave "bone treats" out of our dogs' stockings this year. Even the Food and Drug Administration is warning dog owners about the dangers.

The FDA states;

(they have) received about 68 reports of pet illnesses related to "bone treats,” which differ from uncooked butcher-type bones because they are processed and packaged for sale as dog treats. A variety of commercially-available bone treats for dogs—including treats described as “Ham Bones,” “Pork Femur Bones,” “Rib Bones,” and “Smokey Knuckle Bones”—were listed in the reports. The products may be dried through a smoking process or by baking, and may contain other ingredients such as preservatives, seasonings, and smoke flavorings.

Illnesses caused by these bone treats that have been reported to the FDA and veterinarians range from vomiting, wounds to dogs' mouths and tonsils, intestinal obstructions, and even death.

No good. How long will it take for these types of bones to be completely removed/banned from store shelves worldwide?!?
