Belvidere has decided to raise their sales tax two months after voting to raise their gas tax. 

MyStateline.com - A Belvidere sales tax hike passes. Monday. Alderman approve to raise the sales tax from 7.75% to 8.25% in a 6-3 vote. Belvidere Mayor Mike Chamberlain says after looking at the city's budget -- they knew they had to make tough decisions.

Town leaders say that they know raising taxes isn't a popular idea, but the city desperately needs the $1.2 million the tax hike is expected to bring in.

The second tax hike in the city is expected to help address flooding issues in the southern part of the city and repair roads like Logan Ave.

The sales tax will NOT be applied to groceries and medical supplies. It is scheduled to go into effect on Jan. 1.
