New figures released this month by the U.S. Census Bureau show Rockford's population is declining at a rate surpassed by only a handful of cities across the country.

Officials estimate the number of people living in Rockford has fallen from 153,054 in 2010 to 149,123 in 2014. That's a drop of 2.6 percent and is the ninth-worst performance among 714 cities of more than 50,000 people.

Decatur, Ill. actually checks in two spots worse than Rockford, checking in at -2.8 percent growth. Three cities from Michigan are at the bottom of the list. Three Texas cities are among the top four in growth. At number one is South Jordan, Utah, up 24.5 percent.

Census officials estimate Chicago's population is up 1 percent since 2010, to 2,722,389 people.
