The Better Business Bureau (BBB) points out that one of the best ways to protect your identity is to shred unwanted personal, financial, and confidential documents. It's even better when it's free.

With that in mind, the Rockford BBB has teamed up with Members Alliance Credit Union and Paper Recovery to hold "Free Community Shred Day" Saturday, October 13th, at Members Alliance Credit Union, 2550 South Alpine Road, from 9am to noon.

From the Rockford BBB:

Preventing identity theft is a never-ending and important battle. Consider these statistics; in 2017 1 out of 15 consumers was a victim of identity theft. That’s nearly 17 million people; one million more than in 2016. Another way of looking at it; if the odds of winning the lottery were 1 in 15 then, almost everyone would have family members, friends, or colleagues who are millionaires.

On site shredding services will be provided by Paper Recovery Service Corporation of Loves Park. Consumers may bring a maximum of 2 boxes per car for shedding.

For more information about Community Shred Day contact the BBB at 815-963-2222 or Matt Lynch Director of Marketing at Members Alliance at 815-226-2260.
