Riley O'Neil

I consider myself lucky to have been born and raised right here in the Rock River Valley, a place that my family and my wife Amy's family have called home for generations. I was first hired at WROK in 1983, and except for a short departure, I've spent my entire career right here in Rockford. Halloween of 2016 marked my 15th anniversary of hosting the WROK Morning Show, making me the longest-serving morning show host in the station's nearly 100-year history. Amy and I have been happily married for 25 years, with two (now grown) children, Spencer (who works for a major cruise company), and Molly (a student at Rock Valley College who also dazzles with service at a popular local restaurant). I'm luckier than I ever thought possible. When I'm not here at the station, I can usually be found at one of Rockford's many great, local events, either as host/master of ceremonies, or as an attendee. If we should meet, feel free to buy me 1 to 7 drinks.

Would This Kind of Event Work Here in Rockford?

Here in Rockford, we've shown ourselves to be very open-minded when it comes to trying out sports and/or games that are popular in other countries, but do we have enough hearty, adventurous souls around here to take on the very British Cheese Rolling Race? I think we do, although at this point in my life, I'm not one.

Credit Downgrade Aside, How is Illinois Doing When it Comes to Jobs?

There was a lot of discussion yesterday (with a lot more coming in the future) about Illinois' credit this week after Moody's Investors Service and S&P Global Ratings downgraded Illinois credit rating to near junk status. The next part of the discussion will be what effect the downgrade will have on Illinois' jobs market.

The Rock River Anything That Floats Race Returns August 20th

When I first started at WROK in 1983, one of the first of many really cool events that I was introduced to was the WROK/WZOK Anything That Floats Rock River Raft Race. Hundreds and hundreds of people participated, and thousands more lined the banks of the Rock River to cheer them on. After a good long run, our race was retired. Last year, it returned to much acclaim.

Gurnee, Illinois Graduate Celebrates With Total Face-Plant

Just before my high school graduation ceremony in May of 1981, our graduating class was warned to "not throw your caps in the air at the end of the ceremony." We did it anyway, and miraculously, there were no injuries. Had we been warned to "not do any backflips to celebrate," I most definitely would have complied.

Trip Advisor’s Top Ten Things To Do In Rockford 2017

The quickest way to draw a reaction from someone who works for the Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (RAVBC) is to tell them what we've probably all heard hundreds of times: "There's just nothing to do in Rockford." They won't get angry with you for saying that, they'll just ask for a few minutes of your time to show you how you are mistaken in believing it. They know that the Rockford area is full of cool things to get out and see, do, and enjoy.
