Riley O'Neil

I consider myself lucky to have been born and raised right here in the Rock River Valley, a place that my family and my wife Amy's family have called home for generations. I was first hired at WROK in 1983, and except for a short departure, I've spent my entire career right here in Rockford. Halloween of this year will mark my 15th anniversary of hosting the WROK Morning Show, making me the longest-serving morning show host in the station's nearly 100-year history. Amy and I have been happily married for 25 years, with two (now grown) children, Spencer (who works for a major cruise company), and Molly (a student at Rock Valley College). When I'm not here at the station, I can usually be found at one of Rockford's many great, local events, either as host/master of ceremonies, or as an attendee. If we should meet, feel free to buy me 1 to 7 drinks.

Tonight’s Powerball Jackpot Might be the 10th Largest in the Game’s History

If you're anything like me, and I know I am--you'd love to win the lottery. However, the problem with my desire to be a lottery winner is the fact that I never buy a ticket. Okay, maybe neverĀ is not quite right. I bought a Powerball ticket once, when the jackpot went over a billion dollars. Since you're reading this now, you've probably surmised that I didn't win. I guess I only play when we get into record-breaking territory.

People Who’ve Left Illinois Talk About the Things They Miss

I've only lived outside the state of Illinois for a grand total of about 6 months. In 1985, I went to work for a radio station in Columbus, Ohio, which was a great town to live in with one possible downside--when you left Columbus, you were in Ohio.

Springfield Lands on a Top 20 List of Best State Capitals

We all know that our state doesn't always fare so well on lists of the "Best of," and unfortunately shows up too often on the "Worst of" lists. However, when it comes to the "livability" of state capitals around the US, our Springfield does pretty well.

Seeing Bad Behavior on Rockford’s Streets? It May Be a Millennial

Both my kids are (depending on the chart you look at) millennials, that group of Americans that are constantly (usually with good reason) excoriated for narcissism, bad manners, lack of respect, inability to deal with things that don't go their way, etc. Now, according to Chicago AAA, they're the worst-behaved drivers on our roads.

I Saw a Rockford Dog Doing This Over the Weekend

In the interests of full disclosure, my wife Amy and I don't take our dog Lucy for a ride in the car unless it's absolutely, positively necessary. Why? Lucy hates being in the car, doesn't like to see other cars, is upset by other dogs riding in cars, and basically loses her anxiety-ridden mind at anyone and everything she sees. In a nutshell, we'd rather road-trip with the car full of angry hornets with the windows up.

What D.I.Y. Projects Send Illinoisans to Google For Help?

Maybe you're an expert Do-It-Yourself (DIY) kind of person. You know, the sort of individual that just has the skill to handle any and all projects. The sort of person who snorts when someone says "I Googled how to do ________." Or, maybe you're like me (and millions of others like me) who head straight for the world's foremost authority on everything to help you when you can't make heads or tails of what you're doing.
