Australia Celebrates the King’s 81st Birthday

On January 8th, Elvis Presley would have turned 81 years old (to the true believers, just omit the "would have" from the previous sentence). There were commemorations in some of the usual spots like Memphis and Las Vegas...and Parkes. As in Parkes, Australia.

They just wrapped up a week long bash in Parkes that celebrated all things Elvis. The event was so popular and well-attended that it became the largest Elvis event ever held in the southern hemisphere, with over 20,000 fans shaking their hips, curling their lips, and of course, saying "thank you, thank you very much" several million times. No word on how many peanut butter and banana sandwiches were sold, but I imagine they went like pork chop sandwiches at On the Waterfront here in Rockford.
