Rockford Police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash from 2012.

According to a press release, 36-year-old Anthony Adkins was taken into custody yesterday following a brief foot chase. His arrest follows a two-and-a-half year investigation by Rockford Police Traffic Investigators and the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Officials say it all began with an August 30, 2012 incident, when Rockford Police responded to the intersection of 2nd Street and Grove Street for a report of a man down in the street. Upon arrival, they discovered 34-year-old Michael Steines dead. The on-scene investigation determined Steines was a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle that left the scene prior to police arrival.

Adkins has been charged with a felony count of Failure to Report an Accident Involving Serious Injury or Death and is being held in the Winnebago County Jail in lieu of a $1,000,000 bond.
