It feels like every month a new phone scam comes to the surface. Just like the others, this one can be avoided with some common sense.

The latest scam is being dubbed the "Can You Hear Me" Scam. It operates as follows.

  • Scammer calls and when you answer he says "Can you hear me?"
  • When the victim says "Yes" the scammer records the victim's voice saying the word "Yes"
  • The scammer can now use this in combination with other information they may have on you to authorize unwanted charges on a phone or utility bill.

How can you avoid this scam? Well now that you know about it, if you hear this when you answer just hang up. It may seem rude but that's the best option.

If you think you've been a victim of this scam you should call the police and/or the Better Business Bureau.

Of course you could avoid all this by never answering you phone from an unknown number like I do. It's 2017 who even wants to talk on the phone nowadays?
