AMBOY, Ill. (AP) — Authorities say a 7-year-old northern Illinois girl is dead after the ATV she was riding on hit a deer.

The Lee County Sheriff's Department said Makenzie Rutherford of Amboy died Tuesday at a Rockford hospital. Amboy is about 45 miles southwest of Rockford.

According to Sauk Valley Media, the girl and her mother, 26-year-old Cassandra Gray, were passengers on the ATV driven by 34-year-old Brian Dees of Amboy. The ATV struck the deer about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Police said the ATV rolled into a ditch. Neither Dees nor his passengers wore helmets.

Gray and Dees were taken to a local hospital. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

Police cited Dees for driving the ATV on a road. The crash is still under investigation.
