I'm currently the parent trying to figure out how to give my kids a summer full of fun with a pocketbook that is limited.

Fun on the swingset, inflatable pool or sprinkler in the backyard will only be cool for so long, (literally and figuratively),  and my girls are too young for most summer camps. What's a parent to do? Get a season pass at a local pool? Sure, but that can get pricey for a family of four, plus going to the pool every day will likely get boring after a few weeks.

We can send our kids to the circuit of vacation bible schools offered by many Rockford churches, but most of those occur in June and then we still have July and August to contend with. Now what do we do?

Thankfully our Rockford Park District understands a parent's summertime dilemma, and offers many free or low fee activities that local families can take advantage of.

Here's some fun FREE programs the RPD is offering this summer:

  • Summer Playground Programs - Kids can play games and do other fun activities for free on weekdays at several different area playgrounds.
  • In The Outdoors - Families can have fun in nature with different activities the third Saturday of every month at Seth B. Atwood Park.
  • Sounds of Summer - Treat the family to a free and relaxing evening listening to live performances by local artists at either the Sinnissippi Music Shell, on the terrace at the Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens or Levings Park.
  • Disc Golf - Enjoy 36 holes of golf...using a disc at Anna Page Park!

When it's just too darn hot and humid to play outside, don't forget that kids can have a ton of fun inside at Sapora Playworld at the Carlson Ice Arena, plus there's discounted admission ($3) on Mondays and Wednesdays all summer, and year, long!
